Ronny Chieng

comedian. Chieng is currently an executive correspondent for The Daily Show on
Comedy Central. He also developed and is the star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng
International Student, which premiered on ABC Australia (Australia) in the year
2017. Chieng was born to a Malaysian Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia).
Chieng grew up both in Singapore and the United States, living in Manchester,
New Hampshire from 1989 to 1994. Chieng appeared with Trevor Noah at a
Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. Chieng was invited to audition for The Daily
Show's correspondent job two years after. Chieng was named one of the top 10
comics to watch by Variety in July of 2016. In October of 2016, Chieng appeared
as a guest on The Daily Show to offer a response to the Jesse Watts Fox News
segment that many believed was racist. Chieng aired an expletive-laden
criticism of the segment on Fox News that was deemed conservative by many.
Chieng also revisited the city's Chinatown and Chinatown, where Watters had
mocked residents, and conducted interviews more respectfully with residents in
Mandarin as well as Cantonese. The viral video was featured by the Washington Post,
Slate, as well as other media publications. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout in
his early years. Even though he's lived in Australia for more than 10 years, he
doesn't possess a permanent residency nor citizenship status in Australia.
Chieng made the joke that he was an apologist for cynophobia on the 2018 Daily
Show. However, he later stated that he is "100 100 percent confident about
dogs" in an interview.
